Responsive action doesn’t work on tablet/mobile

When building a simple table and you shrink the browser window to simulate a narrower browser the table is responsive as it should. However, in practice it doesn’t work at all and ends up a mess as shown here:

Can somebody please help me as there’s no point continuing my site if these tables don’t react correctly on smaller devices. Is it me or a bug? I will have to find a plugin that works correctly if it’s a bug.
